Kalyves village offers the ideal starting point for excursions to the greater area of the Chania prefecture as well as the west side of the prefecture of Rethymno. If you wish to explore the region further, set off for an adventurous daytrip to the greater area of Apkoronas, visit the city of Chania, the exotic beach of Balos with its scintillating turquoise waters, the fairy-like beach of Elafonisi and the world renowned gorge of Samaria. Only 20min away from the center of Chania, travellers can witness the medieval magnificence, visit the old Venetian town and walk along the old harbour.
Amongst the many sites to see around Kalyves, including Byzantine churches and castles, one can visit the charming nearby villages of Almyrida, Armeni, Nio Chorio, Stylos, Machairoi, Ramni, Cares, Tsivaras, Provarma, Samona, Farragi, Chiliomoudou and Kyriakoselia, all with their own unique character.
In and around Kalyves, take a nature walk along the rivers and springs or take a short drive to other neighbouring villages with a variety of cultural and historical exhibits ranging from 1,500 BC to 1,900 AD.

• Stylos where visitors can see domed tombs dating back to the post Minoan period (1,000 BC)
• Sternaki featuring several Byzantine churches such as Panagia Monastira or Zerviotissa which date back to the 11th or 12th century AD, as well as the small church of St John Theologos, close to the square in Stylos built in the 12th century AD
• Samona at Kylintra, where a Mycenaean acropolis existed and archaeologists discovered the existence of a Minoan settlement which was abandoned during the post Minoan period between 1,100 and 1,000 BC
• Ancient Aptera, a hidden pearl steeped in History and Myth, that was once one of the most important city-states in the whole of Crete and was actually totally autonomous from around the 6th to 4th century BC, minting its own coins.
